The Night Watch (French: La Ronde de nuit ; English: Night Watch ), is a militia painting by the Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669), completed in 1642. It is also referred to as: 'The company of captain Frans Banninck Cocq'. The official description of the title reads: "Militia company of District II under captain Frans Banninck Cocq and lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch, 'The Night Watch' ", or more accurately: The company of captain Frans Banninck Cocq and lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburgh preparing to march out .The canvas shows the two militiamen from the title, accompanied by other militiamen , as well as some extras, while they are taking up their positions.
The Night Watch is one of the most famous paintings in the world. The painting is owned by the City of Amsterdam and has been part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam since 1808 .
